I have been taking Plaquenil (amongst other medication) very successfully for the last three years but for some reason my local pharmacy gave me Quinoric for my last prescription. For the last three weeks since I started taking Quinoric I have been feeling and have been sick. At first I did not connect the link between the change of brand, but today I suddenly realised this could be the reason why I have been feeling so unwell.

I have been on various websites re the subject and there seems to be general thoughts that indeed, Quinoric does have nauseous side effects as opposed to Planquenil. I have a doctors appointment on Wednesday to discuss this, but would appreciate any thoughts on the subject.

Thanks, Jill

Hi Jill,
I was taking Hydroxychloroquine(Plaquenil) some time ago and like you, without explanation, was given Quinoric on one occasion. ( I must add that it was not my regular pharmacy.) However, when I queried it with them I was told that it did not matter as it was exactly the same as Plaquenil (i.e. Hydroxy).
I took the medication and do not remember suffering any side effects, but when I mentioned it to the Rheumy Consultant, she said that she was not familiar with this brand and would insist that in the future I was only given Plaquenil.

I hope you get clarification on this with your Doctor.

Best wishes
Eleanor

Hi Eleanor

Thanks for your reply. I have decided not to take any more Quinoric again and see what the GP thinks on Wednesday. I am also going to ask that Plaquenil is put on the prescription and not a generic brand.

I appreciate your help very much and will let you know what the doc thinks.

Best wishes

hi Jill,

i take Plaquenil which i have always called Hydroxycholorquine .. i have just checked my tablets and they have Quinoric written on the back of the packaging, so now i am totally confused!!

i have taken this for 18 months now, but do also take Methotrexate and Humira with it now.

i will be interested to see what your GP says, i am not due my next Consultants appointment until June but i will query that i have been taking Hydroxy all this time.

I just looked at my box. On the prescription label it says hydroxychloroquine but on the actual box it says Quinoric. I thought I was taking Plaquenil. I'm totally confused too. Best wishes from Naomi.

hi guys, just caught up with this,i have just collected my prescriptions order and i too have got on box quinoric and under that states hydroxy but on label hydroxy,no where says plaquenil which i believe is hydroxy,as normally both names are on box somewhere,my thinking is it is a different supplier so different name happens all the time, very confusing.dorothy

Hi folks!

Quinoric and Plaquenil are trade names for the base drug Hydroxychloroquine. Both should have exactly the same formulation just different trading names and packaging. Similarly, if you buy a pack of paracetamol from two different stores they will be the same drug in a different box! The coating on Quinoric appears to be different but otherwise the drug looks to be the same to me.

Companies are licensed to produce a drug for a certain number of years and after that time the original developer of the formula loses its licensing rights. Other companies can start producing their own brand but there should be no difference between the two. Normally you would be prescribed the generic drug, Hydroxychloroquine, which is the active ingredient. Pharmacies can buy in drugs from the most effectively priced supplier at the time and hence we end up with a variety of suppliers. It could also be that Plaquenil are not producing Hydroxychloroquine in the same amounts if the drug is now available from other suppliers.

I get 11/12 drugs on a regular basis and they are often from different companies; sometimes it simply comes down to availability. Some have easier packaging to open and I have asked about having these regularly ... no can do, can only have the generic prescribed drug!

Hope this helps to explains the confusion!

A good example of what Lyn is explaining is Nurofen / ibuprofen. Originally Nurofen was the only brand of ibuprofen available but after so many years they lost the licence to produce it exclusively and now you can buy many generic brands of ibuprofen. They all have the same active ingredient in the same quantity (unless you buy the extra strength ones) but they come in a variety of shapes with different coatings and even sometimes different colours.

Hope this helps.

Hi all

I went to the GP on Wednesday and explained the problems I was having. Unfortunately I could not see my usual GP (three weeks waiting list!) so I had to start at the beginning and go through my whole medical history to the locum.

She did comment that although it is all the same generic drug, different brands can react differently occasionally and that is maybe what has happened to me. I have been prescribed Plaquenil again and will start taking them tomorrow. Fingers crossed, but if I am still having problems, I will contact the RA clinic and see what they think. I did wonder if I was generally having some sort of reaction to the hydroxy.

Thanks for everyone's advice and help. It's so good to know there is always someone ready to help and give reassurance when things go a bit wrong.

Love to all.

Jill

Hi Jill,

I have been on Hydrox, or Plaquenil for 4.5 years now and it was changed recently to Quinoric which is the same drug. Try taking it after your breakfast I have done this routine since I began taking it and my MTX in the evening before bed as I used to feel sick when taking this in the morning.

Take care

Lorna x
